As we gazed upwards at those backlit migratory warblers, I noticed a Bare-throated Tiger-Heron … nesting! And then there was a Green Heron , not only showing us its nest, but also an egg. This species is relatively common in tropical Mexico, but I certainly never expected to see it nesting in an urban park. And yet, there it was.

Understandably, after all the trouble of incubating the eggs. A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish. Meanwhile, Little Grebes are still in a slightly earlier phase. Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. A Grey Night Jar does what it does best – being almost invisible.

The Large-billed Crow ( video ) is one of the natural enemies – in the study above, it predated 19 eggs from four pitta nests. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here. Is it worth a scientific paper if a Large-billed Crow eats a fish?

Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration. A happier shrike.

As she continued her monologue about these cats, the Wildcat cautiously walked in our direction, never taking its eyes off of us, stiff-legged, ears motionless, striped like a standard “tiger” domestic cat but entirely in grays. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals. That was one of his cats. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats.
