Frogs and Toads of the World: A Book Review by a Fairy Tale Junkie

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. This exhibit has been making the rounds of science museums, and if comes to your area I highly recommend it, not just for kids.

Some thoughts on scientific collecting

The species was in the news because some scientists had finally managed (or bothered – it’s much the same thing) to locate the population high in the mountains of the Solomon Islands, and catch and photograph one. I can understand why some people are conflicted, but the value to science of the collections is immense.

The man who saved species

Last Sunday marked the end of an era in New Zealand with the sad passing of the conservationist and ornithologist and all round inspiration Don Merton. Today the species is secure on a large number of islands and reserves. Kakapo were moved around New Zealand before all eventually being placed on one island off Stewart Island.
