Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

This laughingthrush is a cooperative breeder – nestlings are fed by all members of a group, often 6-12 (not just 2 as in Wham!): “A female may share a nest with another, and 3 or more adults may take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.” I wonder why. Note to those readers who do not know Wham!:

McWilliam realizes he’s dealing someone special, a career falcon egg-thief.

Hornbills of Sabah

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). The first attempt in hunting was made by the male hornbill which was seen snapping at a passing swiftlet, but was unsuccessful.

The Mandarin Duck

A rather clever approach of evolution to reduce hunting by that rather misnamed species Homo sapiens. One thing that is quite common in Mandarin Ducks is intraspecific parasitism – females leaving their eggs in the nests of other females of the same species. Or watch the last few photos instead.
