Their natural habitat is under threat, as housing developers plan to build on the neighboring wetland, effectively destroying the owls’ remaining hunting ground. The owls themselves are amazing creatures, and we have already begun to observe their nesting process, as they are expected to lay eggs any day now.

Longer story shorter (which I wrote about here ), I found it and was startled to find out that the Ravens ( Corvus corax ) had not only chased it, but they had caught it, killed it, and were in the process of eating the adult King Eider ( Somateria spectabilis ) when I came along. How common is it?

These birds even lay their eggs on piles of cow or horse dung, most likely to elevate them from the cold ground and possibly provide some heating through the process of rotting plant material. Sociable Lapwings breed in several areas along the Kazakhstani – Russian border and overwinter in Iraq, Sudan and northwest India.

It was advisable to remove them at night, to keep them calm, to establish immediately a feeding board on which they would be fed chopped beef and egg to start, then fresh birds, rabbit or squirrel. Keep in mind that birds at this stage will flutter and look like it can’t fly very well, but it’s fine, it’s all part of the learning process. They take a lot longer to grow and develop, unlike the two week growing process of most songbirds. Young raptors like the above Bald Eagle chick are a different matter.

They have special adaptations to stay warm and to keep their eggs and chicks warm. So, which came first, the underwater flight, the ability to hunt fish, the exceptional ability to live in the cold, or the tuxedo-camouflage? At present there may be three reasonable hypotheses to explain this.
