Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of July 2015)

10,000 Birds

It is truly getting into the dog days of summer here in the northeastern United States. Temperatures in the nineties (Fahrenheit – global warming hasn’t gotten that bad yet!), humidity so thick you can practically swim through the air, and the sweet stench of urine in the New York City subway all combine to make life miserable. To beat the heat I birded the coast on Sunday morning and was rewarded with expected birds of shore and sea.

The amiable nature photographer who preserved this special moment was Steve Spitzer, well known in Chicago’s birding community for taking spectacular pictures of even the most common birds. High tide birding in June

If this post goes up, then it means we are still away from civilisation and without computer, internet, electricity and running water. It means we are hopefully finding some new birds for the year list off the beaten track somewhere north of Broome… can’t be too specific can I!!?? When we have had the very big tides in Broome during June there are a few beaches worth checking out for the remaining migratory shorebirds and the resident shorebirds alongside other water birds.
