Tufted Titmouse Plucking a Raccoon

Fortunately, a pair of fellow Queens birders who will be known to those who read my posts about going to Ecuador, Karlo and Alison Mirth, witnessed a Tufted Titmouse taking hair from a Raccoon in Forest Park, Queens, recently and Alison got some pictures that she agreed to let me share here on 10,000 Birds.

Andean Condors On The News

The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. In some regions people will bring their livestock to safe areas to prevent incidents with Andean Condor and Andean foxes. It is estimated that only a few thousand birds remain in the wild.

The idea is that some finches from what is now Ecuador ended up on the Galapagos Islands, and subsequently diversified into a number of different forms … they speciated … filling various niches that on the mainland would have been filled by a number of different species. This included some birds as well as a fox.

Should is not a Solution

Dogs should not be used to hunt foxes. An example of this from outside hunting – Ecuador’s Yasuni National Park. It is very natural condition to look at something going wrong and imagine what should be happening instead. A hungry child should be fed. And embattled minority should be protected. Heathens should be converted.
