This Yellow-crowned Amazon was not quite as vociferous as his Central American cousins And like many of these birds, I too love to spend time beneath the water – there are few things better than free diving or scuba diving with dolphins, whale sharks or coral reef fish. Eagle Owls are often seen hiding in small caves.

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders. We later signed up for a whale and birdwatching tour with Captain Wayne , who had a smallish 12-person boat. Happy puffins.

On the other extreme you have outrageous stories like the supposed Thunderbird photograph of the America West, ambiguous winged creatures like Mothman and the Jersey Devil, and the impossible but incredibly persistent belief that (modern, extant) eagles can and will carry off small children. Come on — obviously Photoshopped!

Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. The species is insectivorous and nests amongst the scree and boulders on the steep mountain slopes. Another highlight is the eyrie of a pair of Verreaux’s or Black Eagles , one of the handsomest eagles on the planet!

For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! I already have a history of searches for this species. My first ever Balkan Egyptian Vultures! 10000birds.com/definitively-the-egyptians.htm. Like a school bus big.

In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen over 20 new species. Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove. I added six species to my year list, including a first (for me) observation of Sanderlings in Nunavut and in breeding colours. Things happen quickly up here.
