They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. If you are afraid of spiders, you might want to get a pet Streaked Spiderhunter. The Crested Bunting would certainly be a highlight in a post on buntings (such as this one ) but does not particularly stand out here in Yunnan.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The active colonies of wasps are efficient protection against primates and large avian predators. But this is too interesting a bird not to show.
