This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat.

Their main use is to display – either to communicate with other members of the species or to scare other species, as a raised crest makes the bird appear larger. In fact, crests occur in at least 20 of the 30 orders of extant birds, and in all major groups of passerines. Crests are made of feathers.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far.

Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list.

we’re already in an open 4×4 heading for the salt pans of the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India. Continuing by the yellow sandstone Hindu temple under construction, than by the large heaps of salt (two thirds of all the salt used in India comes from here) and finally entering the Kutch Biosphere Reserve. Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! Raising and lowering its head, like stretching.
