It remains a good location for observing birds close to the city and easily accessible by public transport. Map of the lake Some of the waterbirds and ducks appeared to be used to the cold weather and water, but maybe they would rather bob about on the water than be blown about on the land. The word “grumpy” comes to mind!

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Fish will lose their spawning ground, otters and White-tailed Eagles will be no more.

Piney Z lake is not large, bisected by a berm that parallels the land-trail as well as a series of fishing earthen fingers that stretch out into the water at regular intervals. Nosing our kayaks between the trunks of bald cypress trees, we watched two Osprey eating fish on their large, stick-filled nest.

Despite all of the dangers we have-snakes, spiders, crocodiles, deadly jellyfish, deadly fish, leeches, ticks, mosquitoes and then a pandemic-we still have a population of almost 26 million people. If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne then there are also plenty of places to go birding in the city itself or not far by public transport.

The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

Some of these islands cannot be reached by any mode of transport except a long ocean crossing and some are well over a thousand miles from the closest human habitation. Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable. That leaves us with the world’s islands.
