Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis Other goodies at Orient State Park included lots of male Surf Scoters courting a few females, Long-tailed Ducks , Red-breasted Mergansers , White-winged Scoters , and a host of our common gulls that we fruitlessly scanned trying to turn up a rarity.

Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out.

En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. And could we just do a quick drive through at a fast food joint? We had to eat some wonderfully prepared Lebanese food including some outstanding hummus. Only one cuckoo? Some guide! Of course not!
