Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis Other goodies at Orient State Park included lots of male Surf Scoters courting a few females, Long-tailed Ducks , Red-breasted Mergansers , White-winged Scoters , and a host of our common gulls that we fruitlessly scanned trying to turn up a rarity.

Sadly, the numbers of Falcated Duck are similarly declining – it is thus listed as Near Threatened. Like fast food, but free and likely more healthy. And it does not even live in reeds. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW).

Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. If there were such a thing as a Periodic Table of Ducks we went from hydrogen to uranium: every duck imaginable was there.

Yeah, we got great looks at the swamphens and also had Mottled Ducks , Gray Kingbird , Yellow-crowned Night-Heron , baby Common Gallinules , and Black-necked Stilts but the lack of a Least Bittern was indicative of Carlos’s inability to get the truly hard birds. And could we just do a quick drive through at a fast food joint?
