A mile later, there’s a traffic jam in front of us, where everyone stands still. There are no traces of the mist any more, the sun is finally out. Protest indeed!

The poor Mountain Bulbul carries the scientific name mcclellandii , after Sir John McClelland (1805–1875) … … even though said man mainly worked as an ichthyologist … … apart from also being sent to north-eastern India to identify if tea could be grown there.

I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around. Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. Their claim to fame?

Further north, we slow down by the ruins of an old farm… and yes, a Little Owl greets us with its ‘smiling’ face. We are going to the Sakule fish farm in the namesake village north of Belgrade – the very best wetland birdscape in the area. Common Cranes. … Being a birder – what does it mean to me? To be… alive?
