I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I caught traveler’s diarrhea four days ago in the jungle (Imodium to the rescue, but just barely).

Only recently was it discovered that one group, which breeds on the Shetland Islands, flies across the Atlantic to winter off the coast of Ecuador – ten thousand miles away from its cousins who breed in Scandanavia and western Russia. Once it was thought that all Red-necked Phalaropes migrated overland to the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

Ducks and geese certainly make up the bulk of the observations. I just got my report off to PASP, so I really don’t know a whole lot about my bird yet, but I do know that it is bird #055, and that its new “Bird Bling” was added in either Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru! as well in my photographs.

I ducked down excitedly and switched on the read torch, shining the weak light under a large bush, and sure enough there was a North Island Brown Kiwi. Tree Swallows Return, It Must Be Spring Polygynandry and the Alpine Accentor Duck Migration Finally Saw-Whet.Or But we didn’t just hear it, we heard it very close.
