We had been floating, birding amidst a massive flock of shearwaters, surrounded by an aquatic city of Spinner Dolphins when Wilfredo spotted two small dark shearwaters flying away from the feeding flock. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. And it was full of Spinner Dolphins and birds. It was immense!

The site is famous for a place called Monkey Mia, where dolphins have learnt to come up to the beach a few times a day to get snacks. That’s fine, and I like dolphins, but I usually prefer them away from a circus. This Green Turtle was at the feeding, under the dock! The dolphin feeding session was fun too.

I had spent the morning on Navarre Beach, walking the pier looking for sea turtles and dolphins, then making my way down the beach. Sometimes great birding days are not about all the birds you see. Some are great because of just one.

But why did 60 dead endangered turtles wash up over three weeks? And what about the dead dolphin? Still, though, 60 sea turtles over 3 weeks? But so far, it looks like the oil spill is not to blame. They also say low oxygen levels are common this time of year due to changes in temperature. Seems like an awful lot.

However, the birds that are seen such as the petrels and possibly the aforementioned tropicbirds are truly special, and these pelagic trips always include sightings of other incredible denizens of the open ocean such as dolphins, seaturtles, and sunfish (mola mola).
