We had been floating, birding amidst a massive flock of shearwaters, surrounded by an aquatic city of Spinner Dolphins when Wilfredo spotted two small dark shearwaters flying away from the feeding flock. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. And it was full of Spinner Dolphins and birds. It was immense!

But, I did take many photos, and used the book, in spurts during the trip and more closely afterward, to identify three seabird species, two expected (Sooty and Black-vented Shearwaters) and one a surprise. It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal.

Because, let’s face it, when you get off that plane and look at those severe volcanic landscapes and then find yourself face to face with one of the islands’ four mockingbird species, you’re not going to think, “Oh, look, lava and a mockingbird.” The updating of the text is very important.

I had spent the morning on Navarre Beach, walking the pier looking for sea turtles and dolphins, then making my way down the beach. So though I had seen many other species that Saturday morning, my day – my weekend really – was made by a Gray Kingbird on a utility line. Some are great because of just one.
