Because as I interrupted my self-doubt to step around a pile of dog poo in the trail, the great ghost of the northern forests lifted off from the ground on the other side of the clearing and then landed again, low in a birch tree in full view. And the day was unseasonably spring-like, not the weather I subconsciously thought of as owly.

Forgotten Prairies

I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. Ferruginous Hawks are native to our western short-grass prairies and their diet comprises almost completely of prairie dogs. Perhaps, this is because we, as Americans, have destroyed nearly every morsel of prairie we have left.

Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. A hungry feral Cat in Minnesota goes and finds new prey in an area it previously had not explored, leaving the last few of one or another bird species alone for a while.

Road Eagles

So, this pair (I assume there are two, though I only saw one today) of eagles has a territory including small dogs and stray children, baby coyotes, crows, but mainly squirrels and marmots right around its nest, and a major river backed up by a large dam about a mile or two away (the Mississippi) and several lakes.

What a horrible thing to happen in Minnesota ! Okay, I accept this is somewhat unconventional, but I can’t get away from the fact that the Painted Wolf , or African Wild Dog , comes up every time I try and think about this. Greg might have chosen a bird that he didn’t see but at least it was a bird! Duncan chose a mammal!
