Humankind has since modified the landscape into a recreational wonderland with open water for boating, fishing, and jet skis with an expansive spoils pile on the south side called Fiesta Island that has access for off-leash dogs, beach recreation, and more. A few rain showers passed which caused us to run for the nature center and cover.

Smaller frogs and toads, mice, bugs, worms, dog food, and carrion, you name it. Focusing in on a flurry of activity from the other side of the water feature, I could make out a bird desperately flapping its wings as Clay-colored Thrushes and Scarlet-rumped Tanagers raised their voices in alarm. Birds too, if they can catch them.

The dogs had been left to starve, no food, water or even shelter from freezing temperatures. Sadly, there were also 27 dead dogs found on the property. It is believed that the dogs were part of a dog fighting ring. “They bear the battle scars consistent with those of fighting dogs,&# Rickey said.

I remember, several times while motionlessly surveying birds, I found myself being investigated by Striped Field Mice , who would dare to come to sniff me. Raising and lowering its head, like stretching.
