Less than a minute later, a very friendly black Labrador dog came ambling by. The Motmot never flew away, and as soon as the dog was out of sight, the tail stopped wagging. In doing some research on the Motmot family, I found several references to the fact that the long decorative tail is actually quite fragile.

As of this summer we have now made it easy for our visitors to find pets and then recommend them to friends and family via Facebook, Twitter and other social applications. When that animal is available, I am notified the next time a pet matching my search is added on Adopt-a-Pet.com. We are calling the idea “Social Petworking.”

Even better is a guide to mammals and reptiles, because snakes and lizards are pretty much up there with mammals when you’re exploring new territory. This is the thing—no matter how devoted you are to birds and birding, once you get to Africa, you can’t resist the mammals. Believe me, I tried.

Rehabbers see reptiles in glue traps, gulls entangled in fishing line, raccoons used as target practice, raptors dying from rodenticides, and songbirds shredded by domestic cats … cats like Puck. Cat and dog rescuers share with wildlife rehabilitators the unfortunate burden of healing the hurt caused by other humans.

Occasionally a chick will fall and be released back into the food chain by the alligators, but on the whole, the birds get a good deal providing that they build their nests beyond the jumping capability (as much as 5 feet as demonstrated in the “Jumperoo Show&# ) of the reptiles.
