Let's deconstruct: The heading is: "Okay, so your steak comes from a cow that lived a happy life--but how did that life end?" It's a cow who--who--lived an allegedly happy life. And perhaps that "better" will distract the reader from the undeniable fact of the unjust slaughter. The needs of the cow aren't even mentioned.

THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. Dutch law requires animals to be stunned before slaughter, but has long allowed an exemption for Muslims and orthodox Jews, who can legally butcher animals according to their centuries-old dietary rules. Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Australian Dairy Farmers animal health and welfare chairman David Basham, said studies had shown "no adverse affects on welfare up to 30 hours".

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? So we went from a ban to a vague statement about the prevention of abuse that clearly doesn't consider slaughter abusive. Where do people get that idea?

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. Cows, domestic sheep, chickens and many others would not survive if they were not raised for human consumption, protected from malnutrition, disease and predators.
