In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. The second responded as I would- with immediate concern and compassion. But this also struck me in other ways. Chaos and insulation.

Isn't the mere existence of violence and suffering sufficient?

The underlying premise is that you can know what is right (such as me knowing what's right then eating cow flesh in the form of filet mignon for a year), but that by no means will necessarily manifest in your behavior. And the only way to totally alleviate that suffering is to not use the animal. I don't get why you can't do both.).

There's no "compassion" in the process. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's cruel.

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness.
