Compassion Cows Suffering

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. The second responded as I would- with immediate concern and compassion. But this also struck me in other ways. Chaos and insulation.

Vamsee Juluri, Professor of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco, takes me back to graduate school when he writes of the importance of the stories we tell ourselves in " Use Free Speech to Celebrate Animal Life, Not to Enjoy Their Suffering." Isn't the mere existence of violence and suffering sufficient?

There's no "compassion" in the process. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's cruel.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans.
