Even sparrows, if you choose the right species and play your cards right, can be elevated to ‘cute’ status. My first instinct was that the rarest gull would rank high on the ‘most interesting’ scale, but that’s a lister’s instinct – a sort of stamp-collecting bias, at best.

In trying to find further evidence of the warbler’s behaviour and the sapsucker’s lifestyle, I found numerous mentions of Rufous Hummingbirds and “other species” coming to feed from sap wells. Does he vigorously defend his food source? Do warblers regularly visit sap wells?

So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics.
