The practice gained wider publicity after the animal rights group PETA said earlier this month that 1 of its agents spent eight months working undercover at University of Utah research facilities. University officials say they only collect animals from shelters willing to participate and pound animals are steered toward nonlethal experiments.

Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

In company with a fine group of folks from the Five Valleys Audubon Society, I made the trip to Lee Metcalf that day. Maybe I’m weird, but there is nothing I like better in a visitor center (aside from clean and comfortable restrooms) than a good taxidermy collection, and Lee Metcalf features a strong entry in this category.

Animals in the tri-state area are euthanized daily, rescue groups are unable to save as many lives as they wish, and animals spend years in boarding kennels while awaiting adopters to fall in love with them. As a foster parent, you can set certain guidelines with the rescue group as to what type of animal you prefer. Consider adopting.
