Recent studies in Sri Lanka have revealed that, upon sighting a predator, a drongo will imitate the alarm calls of at least 4 other bird species (babblers, laughing thrushes, bulbuls, and others), as well as the call given by the specific predator, i.e. a giant squirrel or eagle.

Birding St Lucia, South Africa

Apparently, while in Egypt waiting for a boat to return to Germany he collected specimens of the bird which is now named after him. The Southern Banded Snake-Eagle is listed as Near Threatened as there is only an estimated global population of 1000–3000 individuals. Though I actually quite like zebras.

Corella Dam, Queensland

Lake Corella was formed in 1959 when the Clem Walton Dam was built to collect water for the mining town of Mary Kathleen and is now a popular camping area, especially in the height of tourist season in the cooler months. A family of Black-necked Storks appeared to have recently bred in the area and had not quite fledged.

Fitzroy Crossing low level bridge birding

We wandered over to investigate what a Great Bowerbird would collect near the township of Fitzroy Crossing and we were delighted to find quite an assortment of treasures. It is impressive when Great Bowerbirds collect any item, but carrying a perfectly round and large object is especially impressive! Great Bowerbird bower.

Layover in Singapore

You will either have to leave it at the airport and collect it later (using up precious time), or carry it with you in hot, humid conditions. There is always the chance of an over-flying raptor with Brahminy Kite and White-bellied Sea-eagle commonly seen. Taxis can usually be found quickly and easily unless it is raining.

A Christmas Day list

Our first big surprise was just down the road a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles on a fenceline with an Australian Magpie ! We collected several more species before we got to Cable Beach and then we had the usual suspects-a pair of Pied Oystercatchers , Sanderling, Red-capped Plovers , Common Sandpiper , Greater Sand Plovers and Red-necked Stint.
