Birding Yancheng, Jiangsu

10,000 Birds

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. From my home in Shanghai, it is about a four-hour drive to the North to Yancheng, a place to look for Red-crowned Cranes in winter.

Flight Paths: A Book Review Written During Migration

The chapter titled “Chasing Angels,” for example, starts with naval officer Irven Buss using his naval ship’s radar to track birds off the coast of China in 1946. There are many strands that make up the scientific investigations into the question, “Where do the birds go?”

Birding Wuyuan, China

10,000 Birds

In retrospect, this weekend at Wuyuan was not exactly my finest hour as a bird photographer – hopefully, I could do better now, and perhaps one day I will, should normal traveling ever be possible again in China. 10,000 Birds

Why the Latin species name is cyaniventer (meaning having a dark blue belly) remains a mystery to me though.

Birding Balangshan (peak area) in June 2023

10,000 Birds

Being lazy, a bunch of researchers used camera traps to investigate the species rather than following the birds directly (which would have had some health benefits). They found that the species is diurnal (well, using cameras, would they even have seen nightly activities?), Being wet seems to help, though.
