Birding Yancheng, Jiangsu

10,000 Birds

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. It is not quite clear why they do this as it apparently does not affect breeding success. A nice example of gender equality of sorts.

Birding Wuyuan, China

10,000 Birds

In retrospect, this weekend at Wuyuan was not exactly my finest hour as a bird photographer – hopefully, I could do better now, and perhaps one day I will, should normal traveling ever be possible again in China. Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword. Wuyuan is in Jiangxi province.

Tropical Cyclone Iggy

10,000 Birds

There are very few areas in Roebuck Bay that shorebirds can roost on very high tides due to the cliffs and many of the larger species will go out onto the land behind the mangroves. The rest of the birds had been marked locally, but we still took down the details as the next time they are observed may well be in Taiwan, China or Korea.

Birding Napo, Guangxi, China – part 1

10,000 Birds

That comes at a price – the HBW describes the species as “stocky and fairly sluggish” and – with a critical undertone – continues to state that the species is “generally less agile in flight than are most flycatchers”. Why the Latin species name is cyaniventer (meaning having a dark blue belly) remains a mystery to me though.

Birding Balangshan (peak area) in June 2023

10,000 Birds

Being lazy, a bunch of researchers used camera traps to investigate the species rather than following the birds directly (which would have had some health benefits). They found that the species is diurnal (well, using cameras, would they even have seen nightly activities?), Being wet seems to help, though.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 2)

10,000 Birds

Interestingly, these juveniles look more similar to another species, the Pale-billed Parrotbill, than the adult babblers – and they sometimes are part of the same flock. If you want to see how this species builds its nest, see here.) These roads are much less of a hindrance for the Pin-striped Tit-babbler , a mid-story bird.
