Take the Grey-eyed Bulbul , which eBird describes as a “drab, undistinguished-looking bulbul” Seeing this bird in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China in December last year, I though it was actually quite appealing. In fact, bulbuls are the work horses of the bird world in many parts of Asia and Africa.

In Kangding, there is a rather opulent bird hide – two stories, solid construction, spacious, lots of glass, a separate paved parking lot, though mysteriously (and as far as I can tell from my experience of living in China for almost 20 years, not indicative of fundamentally different physical needs of Chinese people) missing a bathroom.

On Bestiality

One good acquaintance I could probably call a friend is an ethics professor who flies back and forth from Texas to China frequently argued in a group pertaining to bestiality. This occurs in all animal breeders: bovine, horses, dogs, cats, pigs, and other animals. He was the only one against it for religious reasons.

Birding beyond Brisbane

We did have the good fortune of finding an individually marked Bar-tailed Godwit that was marked in Yalu Jiang Nature Reserve in China last April 15th and was last seen there on May 11th 2012. Sometimes they were with horses, but that’s OK! It appears to work very well and the birds were relaxed. Shorebird roost at Toorbul.
