However, there are a few stand out sites here and there that are significantly better for species like Jabiru, Lance-tailed Manakin, and Nicaraguan Grackle to name a few. From the Arenal area, it’s a pretty quick hour and a half deal up to Los Chiles. Nicaraguan Grackle only lives in marshes around Lake Nicaragua.

They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. Thus 100 species were missed by the time he woke up and noticed that eBird had reset the counters at midnight(do you guys have nothing better to do?). Entrada Los Chiles (El Parque) hasta Caño Negro. They came home exhausted.

Whether a birder happens to be doing a big year or just wants to add species to his or her Costa Rica list, a visit to Cano Negro is essential. I’m not doing a big year this time around but I still love seeing quality species like the ones that occur at Cano Negro.

This is a very hot and dry region known as El Chaco where many interesting bird species can be found. This road trip took us south-east moving away form the mountains and to lower flat land which had been converted to farmland. This land has gone through extensive ecosystem destruction from farming cattle and soybeans.

The idea is that some finches from what is now Ecuador ended up on the Galapagos Islands, and subsequently diversified into a number of different forms … they speciated … filling various niches that on the mainland would have been filled by a number of different species. In their habits I cannot point out a single difference.
