You see, the chickens are being shortchanged. Americans love chicken. In 2008, over nine billion chickens were slaughtered for Americans to eat. Chicken soup and chicken wings are about as American as apple pie. When we eat eggs we eat chicken eggs almost exclusively.

And of course, many self-identified vegetarians eat fishes and/or chickens. The unnecessary killing of a terrified animal who was likely fighting for his life, becomes he lined up to be slaughtered so you may dine on his flesh. During the show they give out Good Egg Awards to kids who've performed "acts of kindness."

There will be no pies or cakes that were made with milk that was meant for calves, or eggs that represent dead male chicks , forced molting, debeaking and other mutilations and cruelties. There will be no greyhound corpse on our table, no turkey corpse and no pig corpse. Of course, the world outside of our home tells a different story.

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. Andrew from Good Honest Dollar had an excellent question.

One cannot produce eggs or dairy products on a large scale without the wholesale exploitation of animals. One might think that eggs and dairy products are still preferable to meat on the grounds that "At least I am not contributing to the unnecessary killing of animals" but that too is false.

Preliminary Study of Slaughter Value and Meat Characteristics of 18 Months Ostrich Reared in Hungary. Studies on improving ostrich egg hatchability. Also, I learned that in the US , ostrich eggs are priced at $40-$75. Each fresh egg weighs 4 pounds and is the equivalent of 24 chicken eggs. .
