On eBird, Horicon NWR has nearly 300 species observed, more than 18,000 checklists, and 13 hotspots. During the summer, in addition to rails and bitterns, there are dozens of Black Terns ferrying little fish back to the nest, a treat for any birder. It is a popular eBird hotspot with nearly 13,000 checklists and 260 recorded species.

For example, exposure to these substances is negatively impacting the reproductive abilities of some fish species, threatening their extinction. Play it safe. Switch to a plant-based diet.

Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

Activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are categorized as “consumptive” uses. In contrast, consumptive uses were minor: fishing accounted for 10 percent and hunting was just 4 percent.

The Magic Hedge in Chicago, of course. Sure, migration was in evidence — both Kinglet species present, Hermit Thrushes everywhere, White-throated Sparrows tuning up their songs in such abundance that they provided an ongoing soundtrack, American Robins and assorted blackbirds on the move.
