The altruistic vampire, back at the roost after a meal of horse or cattle blood, will regurgitate the blood to feed not only her own pup, but other adults and their pups too, all of this prompted by being groomed by the donee and, in particular, by being licked on the lips. In keeping with high diversity in other aspects of the avian kingdom, including falcons and excluding owls, this small country has a raptor list that tops fifty species. While there’s a lot of protected habitat, with so many other raptors and birds to compete with, each species has a pretty small population.

They used to be but a burgeoning population in need of more living room and land for cattle and crops destroyed a fair portion of those rainforests during the 20th century. At least two gave their growling, frightening calls all night long and were joined by the low rumbling call of the Crested Owl.
