Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. a Cattle Egret in Brooklyn.

I pointed at the bird shown below but he insisted it could not be that species – no long tail … For people of a certain age, gender and background, at some point The Smiths were the most important band in the world. Cattle Egrets have perfected that smudgy look. But do we really care? This one looks different.

Note to other species: better do not rely on mature primary forests, as this may lead to extinction. This says more about my inability to differentiate between warbler species than about the rarity of the bird – but the bird was kindly singing. But what do I know about the taste preferences of Cattle Egrets.

Where it is not – for example, in Japan – it will have difficulties finding a partner to mate. This Cattle Egret has just read a paper stating that it would be 3.6 The solution for one female Chinese Pond Heron in a Japanese heronry: mating with a Little Egret ( source ). How convenient. No wonder it looks a bit pissed off.

We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. Especially of all the species that had been introduced to the US. And after all, some birds have to expand their range sometimes.

Mike’s comments regarding his recent stopover in Japan struck a chord that has been resonating within me for a week or two. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris.

During July, 11 beats birded 11 countries (USA, UK, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Japan, UAE, Mexico, China and Saudi Arabia) and submitted 82 checklists.
