Halfway between SouthWild Pantanal and the northern terminus of the Transpantaneira, Pousada Alegre offers slightly more affordable lodging set within a working cattle ranch. Crossing them was like taking a leap of faith each time. Alas, it was over too soon.

You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies. Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. So, Carlos decided to make me feel ungrateful by taking me to see another species of parrot, this one countable. Only one cuckoo? If Carlos were as good as advertised we would have had several. We needed countable species!

In fact the edges beside the highway are being burned to give vehicles more vision beyond the long dry grass as cattle wander freely across the northern parts of Western Australia. We scan through the waterbirds looking for anything obscure and discover four Green Pygmy-geese floating among the ducks.
