In the first full day, we have seen dozens each of giraffes, zebra, warthogs, elephants, 12 rhinos, 30 hippos, 3 Cape Buffalo, crocodiles, jackals, monkeys, baboons, literally a thousand impala, and at least 10 different antelope type animals. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. There were grumpy old fishermen, fishing through the closed season when the fish enter the backwaters to spawn, but also carrying handguns on their belts and assuming that, being armed and dangerous, they have every right to the area. I think that the ponds were already out of use and filled with atmospheric water only.

We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. It was a good location to observe Brahminy Kites , White-bellied Sea Eagles , Grey-headed Fish Eagles , Oriental Pied Hornbills and Dollarbirds. There was something “not right” about it.
