In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead. If the wind carries them on, maybe they will go to Panama, or even make it to Colombia. At the moment, night excursions to Poas are limited by pandemic driving restrictions but I can still surmise about the species flying overhead. Cuckoos are up There.

… – part 2 – Once I finish this writing, with a strange mix of emotions I will put the Lynx field guide Birds of Colombia to the bookshelf for the first time, more than half a year after I received it. Hoatzin is one of the species I always dreamed to see, and then I forgot they are possible on this tour, so I didn’t expect them!

Instead of going on about zip lines and other modern, adventure tourism attractions, the birding crowd talks about taking photos of Resplendent Quetzals , seeing dozens of hummingbird species, and the seemingly odd absence of raptors in Costa Rica but nope, we don’t really talk about extinction.

It’s going to take a while but if I can expend time and energy (aka birding kung-fu) in the right places, I can certainly make that happen for Costa Rica. Nevertheless, I still have over 232 species including the latest addition- a Striped Owl heard from my bedroom window as it called into a moonlit night.
