What Flies Over Costa Rica in the Night?

In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead. If the wind carries them on, maybe they will go to Panama, or even make it to Colombia. No sparrows or migrant juncos nor hardly any Yellow-rumpeds and forget about Orange-crowned (a serious mega around here!) An Eastern Kingbird on its way to the Amazon.

… – part 2 – Once I finish this writing, with a strange mix of emotions I will put the Lynx field guide Birds of Colombia to the bookshelf for the first time, more than half a year after I received it. Indigenous community of El Remanso, right underneath the imposing monoliths of Cerros de Mavecure.

Pat’s 2017 Year List for Costa Rica and Wherever Else

It’s going to take a while but if I can expend time and energy (aka birding kung-fu) in the right places, I can certainly make that happen for Costa Rica. With luck, this bird list will also see species from other countries, I hope “wherever else” ends up referring to Colombia and Brazil!

Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations. But how about when the Costa Rica conversation involves a birder? What a horror!
