In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds. On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ).

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Of significance were the large number of White-necked Herons , which had taken to balancing on fence-lines, gates and any raised growth due to the flooded land. The raised lumps on the horizon are termite mounds! We counted over three hundred of these birds within easy view and no doubt there were many more.

This land has gone through extensive ecosystem destruction from farming cattle and soybeans. This dirt road was the soybean truck-nightmare; about every 10 minutes we had large double-trailer trucks filled with soybeans drive very fast and raise a huge dust cloud that took another 5 minutes to settle. We’re passing the Dasada village where shop owners and artisans are opening their doors, collecting rubbish in the street and burning it, while standing around those small fires and warming themselves up. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Winter mornings are pretty cold, even without the wind-chill effect of an open Maruti Gypsy.
