Parrots galore : Down by this one river, there were flocks of Mealy, Red-lored, White-crowned, Blue-headed, and Brown-hooded Parrots. Parrots in Costa Rica require plenty of old trees for nesting as well as for food. Scope looks were had at the pygmy-owl just before we saw the jacamar.

endure for ground-cuckoos, staring cat-like into the dim depths of rainforest, I am grateful to help cater to their birding needs. A few other birds also showed, highlights including a tree full of screeching Mealy Parrots but other birding experiences par excellence were waiting in the wings. Loving the Ground-Cuckoo.

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. At this hour I am a reluctant, under-caffeinated sherpa – and concentration must be given to the dangers of the footpath ahead.

I like getting up before dawn…as long as skies are clear and owls are calling – Yep, nothing like hearing the alarm at 3 in the morning after a night of shallow sleep. However, if the stars are out and Spectacled Owls happen to be calling at Finca Luna Nueva , you won’t want to go back to sleep.

He is currently safe and well and watching, with his cats, from the window. Barn Owl – Tyto alba. Great Horned Owl – Bubo virginianus. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl – Glaucidium brasilianum. Little Owl – Athene noctua. Tawny Owl – Strix aluco. Barred Owl – Strix varia.

We can say with much certainty that the majority of people admire and are fascinated with the resplendent colors of macaws, parrots, toucans and hummingbirds.
