Having pets at a young age instills kids with a sense of confidence that they can take care of an animal and help it to live a thriving life. More importantly I find pets can be great therapy for kids.

Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. Frizzell explained that a large population of feral cats is ultimately detrimental to the overall environmental health of the base, its native species and ecosystems. Feral cats may be an animal problem, but there is a human solution.

They may have no idea what they’re doing, but their compassion overrides their doubt. A pet cat raising orphaned ducklings! That is, until the ducklings grow up, are released into a pond, and greet the local feral cat colony as long-lost relatives. And sometimes they even give us money, which elevates them to sainthood.

When referring to cats, dogs and horses of unknown sex, the children would randomly assign sex, with the conventionally "prettier" animals being called "she." I remember that as a child I called all cats "she" and dogs "he" in the absence of a name. We need language that doesn't support a divide between "pet" animals and everyone else.
