In fact, the bird is so popular that it was also chosen for South Dakota’s bicentennial commemorative quarter! Ring-necked Pheasants are native to Asia, brought over in the 1880’s. These males are striking.

In a completely unrelated case, a South Dakota man, Randy Albers, pled guilty to charges related to poisoning Canada Geese on his farm and was sentenced to a year of probation. Thee is still no information on the more recent killings of the majestic birds. He must also pay a $5,000 fine and $1,650 in restitution.

A gang of four Calgarians (if that is what you call people from Calgary) are doing a combined mammal and bird big year across Canada , hoping to hit 400 bird species and 50 mammals, though it seems that they really want to hit a combined 500 species (with the catchy moniker “Fur and Feathers 500″).

That bird stuck around for a while, invariably associating with some Canada Geese on a specific fairway on a specific golf course near Half Moon Bay. It truly is the “Warbler Capital of the World.”
