The Humane Society of the United States is the big bully on this strange playground. I wish their mission was to end animal agriculture.

But there is a significant contingent who is not as enamored with the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act as he is. Part III: Pepper Goes to Washington. It "guarantees humane treatment?" Maybe on paper.

There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. I do disagree with some of what follows, though, and agree with some as well (my comments are in italics): The animal rights movement must adapt their political campaigning strategies to these psychological facts.
