At more than 15 million acres, California is the only other state with more than 5 million acres of wilderness. Of course, as places that are largely “untrammeled by man,” wilderness areas also have birds ( 591 species according to one study ) for birders willing to leave roads and infrastructure behind.

Oh yes, straight from California and very much twitchable, a first year Heerman’s was found in early March hanging out at the cruise ship dock. It’s a bird species I have expected for some time, an overdue bird if you will. Our own version of Gullmania began with the first documented sighting of a Heerman’s Gull.

But, if you have arrived from out of town, with no car and limited time, you need ideas that can easily be achieved from the city centre on public transport. Black Phoebes hawk for flies from the ruins and Western Gulls, California Gulls and Heerman’s Gulls can often be seen in the pool. In winter a few ducks are likely.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.
