In October of 2017, I took what was my first trip to California as a birder. My girlfriend (and later fiancée) Katherine and I had planned an eight-day vacation to the Bay Area, mostly to visit her sister in inland Napa County, but also to see as much of San Francisco as we could.

Imagine, though, the chances of being killed in a helicopter by a frigatebird! In January 2008, a day after hurricane force winds raked the coast of Northern California, another juvenile Magnificent Frigatebird turned up in the small town of Healdsburg, on the Russian River, hundreds of miles north of where frigatebirds are found.

It looks like they are getting killed by ships as they try to eat krill. Tags: california san francisco marine life marine animals whales krill. Really sad. Last year's krill population was also large, but it did not bring the same cluster of whale deaths.

A poisoned rodent can kill whatever eats it, and death by poison is a very bad way to go. as well as a rare mammal, the California fisher. The rodents eat the bait, stagger out of the building looking for water, and are easy prey for whatever carnivore happens to be passing by, be it wildlife or someone’s pet.

Interesting to learn, for example, that in 1885 more than five million birds were killed in the United States for the millinery industry, and that in 1904 market hunters in Oregon killed over 120 tons of waterfowl for the restaurant trade in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.

That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. But, we’re facing a world of shrinking biodiversity and depressingly-high bird kill numbers that demand an accounting outside of our self interest. I was mortified.
