Then, in one of my freshmen science classes, there was a discussion about extinct species, which then lead to the topic of threatened, or endangered species, and what we could do to help out. Well, high school turns in to college, college turns into a job and the need to make a living, and I never found, or helped out the Snowy Plover.

The ABA’s 50th Anniversary and Information: From Scarce to Abundant

The internet has been game-changing for birding, just as it has been disruptive in other fields. My impression is that most young birders are eBirders, a trend that will surely continue due to its convenience, accessibility, and contribution to science. In that world, a mimeographed newsletter was a giant leap forward.

An unusual auk baby

One North American species I am very familiar with is the Cassin’s Auklet , which ranges from the end of the Aleutian Islands to California. The species readily takes to nesting in small artificial boxes, and the scientists of PRBO Conservation Science have over 450 such boxes scattered across the island to monitor the species.

Some Chinese Pheasants

As a popular game bird, the Ring-necked Pheasant seems to have such high importance in the US that there are several papers just discussing the species in individual US states. Examples: California. Connecticut. These Chinese authors should have taken a look at the (extremely white) “ears” of the pheasant first.
