2013 Big Year Update

10,000 Birds

Mark Kirk and Alisha Belo are doing a southern Africa big year, trying to see 800 species. As of the end of March they had already reached a whopping 652 species ! Ali Iyoob is sitting pretty at 230 species in his North Carolina big year during which he is trying to break the state record of 351.

Pat’s Year List, it’s 2016!

10,000 Birds

A cold, productive day spent birding with a friend from Buffalo was marked by two owls, lots of ducks, Tundra Swans , several gulls, and other targets not possible in tropical Costa Rica. Back in Costa Rica, walks through coffee and fields near the house, and a few other day trips have upped the list to 250 species. White-eyed Vireo!

A Great Day’s Birding in Suffolk County, New York

It was the only real highlight at Shinnecock for we two jaded birders, though we did appreciate seeing all three scoters, a whole bunch of Common Eiders , both species of scaup, some Great Cormorants , and a bunch of Red-breasted Mergansers. all three of the Greater White-fronted Geese we spotted with a bunch of Canada Geese.

Little Big Year Week 33: Yellowstone

In talking to the local guides, and Rangers, they all agreed that they had not been seeing too many species around in the last couple of weeks. Where else but in Wyoming will you find Peacocks and a Buffalo together? Little Big Year species – 888. The surprise addition to that list was a pair of Pectoral Sandpipers.

Collaborative List – October 2019

172 lists were shared and 1004 species were seen, both records for October, so well done beats! Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver – Bubalornis niger. Canada Warbler – Cardellina canadensis. Canada Goose – Branta canadensis. 14 countries were birded this month by 13 beats; a record participative effort!
