It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” Breeding pairs form exclusive social bonds, yet each partner will still mate with other individuals.”

The Latin name swinhoii is a reference to Robert Swinhoe, a British naturalist and diplomat with the usual shortish but colorful life of many of the colonial managers. Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword. Given the recent global developments and events, I understand the bird very well.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. This bit of science is a nice final counterpoint to an account that has emphasized art, history, and literature. We have a lot of source material.
