The adventure of the second European Breeding Bird Atlas, or EBBA2, was the topic of one of my first posts here at 10,000 Birds: In a warm Catalonian March, Barcelona is filled with sunlight and full of Rose-ringed and Monk Parakeets. In a very short time, we get two responses, two birds calling from opposite directions.

American White Pelicans in Key West

I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. Their populations have grown about 5% every year since 1966 , and their global breeding population is now larger than 120,000 birds. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.

Definitively the Egyptians!

In short, the accepted view used to be that a small breeding population of Egyptian Vultures inhabited Southern Africa, but has vanished facing the spread of towns, roads and farms. In the 1970s we had two to four breeding pairs, in the 1980s one to two, in the 1990s it was zero to two (irregular breeding).

SERVIR Africa Workshop. The best season for the north-west circuit is February to May, during the rains when most birds breed. Serengeti NP protects a huge swathe of almost 15,000 km2 / 6000 mi2 in north-west Tanzania. The best timing is during the rains, April-May and October-November, when birds breed. Lake Nakuru.

Known breeding localities are now limited to only a few of the islands in the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Antigua/Barbuda. With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established.
