The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. These islands and their surrounding waters are protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago.

In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).

We also try to re-nest uninjured baby birds so we don’t interfere with a bird’s breeding cycle. A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. If you do decide to give your liver a rest then rest assured there are birds to be seen here.
