In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. It's the one that matters most to beings who simply want to live their lives without betrayal, disrespect, enslavement and slaughter.

April 21, 2008 To the Editor: Re “ Million-Dollar Meat ” (editorial, April 23): In vitro meat might not appeal to everyone, but I am guessing that the day PETA awards its prize money will be a happy day for the billions of land animals bound for slaughter. More than nine billion chickens are slaughtered each year in the United States.

Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. Like when they're about to be, say, slaughtered?

I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

Still, I can’t help thinking that there is some parallel between the mass slaughter of the Passenger Pigeon in 19th-century North America and the mass slaughter of songbirds in southern European countries today. Or the destruction of the forests, food source and breeding grounds. Or the absence of legal protection.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. It is a very interesting read, and as I stated in the post I wrote on my blog , part of the team that wrote the plan is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, one of the states proposing a Sandhill Crane slaughter. Wicked, right?
