Singapore lost a lot of birds during its urbanisation, but as the city has tried to green itself some have been coming back Pulau Ubin is a lovely undeveloped island near Malaysia with lots of forest left, and having made it here the hornbills have also begun to be seen on the main island of Singapore too. We can hope!

We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. Other areas of Singapore had not had this level of rubbish, but with the tidal movements in the Johore Strait it appeared much of it ended up her from both Singapore and Malaysia.

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Now pairs of hornbills feed outside this correspondent’s window”.

So–the book covers islands that belong to the Republic of Indonesia and to Malaysia. But, it doesn’t cover all or Indonesia or all of Malaysia. Does the fact that this guide doesn’t include all of Indonesia or Malaysia mean that a birder going to these countries will have to invest in multiple field guides?

Well – I only saw two species, the most common ones at Sepilok, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. One study found that there seems to be some work sharing among the breeding adults – the male had a higher visitation rate of the nest while the female was the only one that brooded. Not that they need many words anyway.
